The Summer and its warm days are slowly fading away as Houston turns a little cooler. As I consider what my best Summer purchase and travel piece was, I reflect on the cruise we took from Barcelona to Italy and back, and there is no doubt that my moi moi scarf was the most used piece.

A stunning ombre scarf with the colors of navy, ecru, and black blended together; a long scarf that highlighted and blended with the items I wore on my trip. I was stopped so many times and asked, “Where did you get that scarf?”

Furs of Fall

Fur is still a girl’s best friend.

When I turned 21 and wanted a fur coat, my Dad diplomatically explained that it was all well and good owning a fur but that I would have to know that each season styles changed, and I would have to know that I could afford the next season’s coat.

 Furs have never ceased to excite me. My very first mink jacket, a stunning 3/4 piece in a beautiful gray hue with inset leather, still lives on – 40 years later.

Winter Fashion

Trend report as the holidays approach. Again it is about life style and feeling comfortable in clothes we wear. More and more we are loving fabrics with soft luxury feel and a touch of stretch. Seems we all need that extra little give.

It is still about the pant and we are loving the skinny look. For dress up where skinny is not always appropriate a pant that drapes, a leg that flares but does not flop around.The important issue is to be rid of all that bulk flapping fabric that hangs beneath the butt, or is so wide on the thighs that it flops around and instead of being flattering makes us look bigger than we really are.
Layering is important and a longer under pining worn with a shorter vest, jacket, bolero or sweater looks really cool. It tends to add length and looks great back with a narrow pant. This is a time to be daring and shop our own wardrobes to put combinations together, be bold.

Every year we shop with an eye to find the next great fitting pant and at BB1 Classic (you know – only the most trendy Houston stylish womens clothing ) we have had our fall favs. Luisa Cerano skinny pants this season has done so well and we sad to have almost a sell out already as we cannot get replacement inventory. But being resourceful we always have our customer covered and we have some wonderful new surprises. Before I move on our most dressy pant that can take you out to work, lunch, dinner, shopping and cocktails feels like you wearing your pajamas. Go figure.

Its the new lux cover up, as a vest, a throw over and we have the hottest item yet, just arrived from PARIS, you slip your arms in and you sport what looks like a really great scarf feel, has pockets to keep our hands warm and the wrap stays on the body. Our Luisa Cerano cool fur bolero this season ties with a little web band around the waist, how appropriate for lunch, dress up your jeans and you stay comfortably warm, the piece is light and comes in all yummy colors. We love our basic browns, charcoal, navy and black and our Italian boleros at a great price point are a must for all our animal lovers who feel they cuddling their best friend.

To dress our necks we have an incredible line of pearls to layer, the closures are magnetic so you can add on strands, break strands and layer all lengths, dig deep for chains in your jewelry box that you have not worn in a while, layer all this and if you need to freshen up, we have great options at BB1 Classic. Bedeck our arms with bracelets, I am wearing them all, I love the pieces and I am stacked up. If I share one here and there I do not notice any gap.

With opaque hose, leggings and more leggings we can all be wearing dresses and skirts, we can even dare wear them shorter as we hide what ever our legs need to hide. Tunics. long vests and longer soft jackets become our next best friend. We stand out as different and oh yes the jacket is back, its cool and has style and flair or else we don’t want it. Boots and more boots, high ones, low ones and who says you should throw it out if you have not worn it in a year? My pride and joy and comfort has been an Italian boot I bought so many years ago, to be exact and this may sound scary, almost 40 years ago. They are a soft black leather with a tiny trim of red leather finished as a seam going across the foot. It has a cuff that fits over the top of the boot, like a riding shoe in embossed charcoal grey leather trimmed with a fine band of the red leather and the piece is convertible, can be worn on or off the shoe leaving you with a classic black boot. All those years ago I bought a soft sling purse, (messenger size) in black with the red leather binding, its perfect, it always makes it for at least one wear in the season and some times more, I am not vintage but when you buy well you have your pieces and memories close to the heart.

Fashion is a fun ride, we love the change, like the change of the seasons and for us as women we have to keep thinking out of the box, move with the times and stay young. Life while you have it is a ball, roll with the punches and we will survive.

A once in a lifetime experience meeting Sir Elton John:

Julian and I were privileged to be invited as Centurion members with compliments to an exclusive concert in New York City with Sir Elton John. The entire weekend was a once in a lifetime experience. We arrived Friday night and stayed at the luxurious New York Palace. On Saturday we were invited to an exclusive lunch at the Ritz Carlton and were interviewed and videoed. This interview will appear on the American Express website, more information later. The subject of the interview was our memories and songs of Sir Elton John: Julian and I were fortunate in the early 80′s to attend our first concert with Elton John in South Africa at Sun City. Being here today twenty-seven years later at an exclusive Centurion member event, an intimate evening with ELTON JOHN was the most awesome experience:

The evening began with an exclusive reception with open bar, hors d’oeuvres, and a private meeting with Sir Elton. We were the first to have our picture taken with Elton, the one posted above. You can imagine our emotions when he embraced us both for the photograph.
After that, we were seated in the Avery Fisher Hall with incredible seats and the concert began, Sir Elton John on stage with only his big black piano. He was dressed in a long black tail coat with his name embroidered down the lapel.

It was at this time when I used my BlackBerry camera, for the first time. I had to capture the moment!
The concert was an intimate experience with his audience, he spoke about the songs he played. The clarity of the piano keys as he moved his fingers across the key board was no other than spectacular. He played for two and a half hours. He spoke about his memories of friends and those no longer with him.
He referred to Ronald Reagan’s lack of not realizing how serious the AIDS epidemic was; in the early years when Elton felt that if more was done to combat AIDS more people could have been helped.
Elton lost his dearest friend, Ray Cooper, but spoke about the last concert Ray performed at. As sick as he was, with help onto the stage, Elton said when he started to sing his voice still had the sound of a sixteen year old. Ray died three weeks after that concert. Elton sang a song in tribute to Ray and asked G-d to bless his dear friend Ray.
Elton also spoke about his lyricist and closest friend, Bernie Taupin, and spoke about the fact that they have never worked together in the same room or been together to write and compile a song. For this reason they have remained such incredible partners and never argued, not even one single day about song writing.
I felt like I was back in the past, revisiting my youth, standing right at the stage listening to him sing "Daniel"- Your Song, "Candle in the Wind"- the tribute was to Norma Jean; Marilyn Manroe who he had never met. He was too young and she died before her time, her life like a ‘candle in the wind.’
I remembered Elvis’s version of “Candle in the Wind,” his tribute to Norma Jean. He never met her, as he was busy too.
Amongst the mix of songs, Elton sang a song to be released on a new album “You’re never too old (To Hold Somebody).”
I am a couple of months older than Elton, so I grew up with his music in the 70′s, we were already in our early twenties. His compassion for life, sense of dress, and music has stood out in the world. He was knighted and is today known as Sir Elton John.
His friendship to Princess Diana was unsurpassible and “Candle in the Wind” was rewritten as a tribute to Diana, her life too was like a ‘candle in the wind’ and he misses her so much.
We are so appreciative of American Express- Centurion Card, having included us in this incredible experience. The cherry on the cake was receiving a beautifully framed sheet of music, “Your Song”, autographed by Elton John and a beautifully framed photograph with Julian and I and Sir Elton John. Elton and I began wearing dark glasses at the same time, and we both cannot be without them day or night.
The coincidence of Julian and Elton John both in black and red was astonishing. I almost feel like the odd man out!
